Piotr Wroński

Former intelligence and counterintelligence officer – in the SB and, after vetting, in the UOP and the Foreign Intelligence Agency, which he left in 2013 with the rank of colonel. Author of novels about the inner workings of the security services of the Polish People's Republic.1

Service in the SB

According to an event announcement prepared by the Poznań branch of the IPN (2015), Piotr Wroński was an intelligence and counterintelligence officer. He joined the Security Service during martial law. He first worked in the Technical Bureau of the MSW, on fixed telephone tapping (the so-called Central Reception Point).1

After a ten-month course at the Intelligence Personnel Training Centre in Stare Kiejkuty he moved to Division XI of Department I of the MSW, which combated so-called ideological subversion. According to the IPN, he took part there in operations aimed at identifying the underground structures of “Solidarity” in Poland and abroad and at taking control of them.1

UOP and the Foreign Intelligence Agency

After vetting in 1990 he served in the UOP and, from 2002, in the Foreign Intelligence Agency, working on the so-called eastern direction. He left the AW in 2013 with the rank of colonel.1,2

Writing

The IPN describes “Spisek założycielski. Historia jednego morderstwa” (The Founding Conspiracy: The Story of a Murder; Editions Spotkania) as a roman à clef about the circumstances of the murder of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko by SB officers, with the author's own interpretation of the motives and aims of those who organised the crime. According to the IPN announcement, the book also contains photographs of SB safe flats, dead-letter boxes and observation posts.1

In 2015 the IPN held discussions of this book in Poznań (24 September, Raczyński Library, chaired by Piotr Jegliński) and in Warsaw (22 September), where “Weryfikacja” (Vetting; Editions Spotkania) was also presented.1,3

Significance

Wroński is one of the few authors whose career spans both the security apparatus of the Polish People's Republic and the services of the Third Polish Republic after the 1990 vetting; the IPN invited him to talks about this period as part of its “Przystanek Historia” (History Stop) programme.1,3
