spy swap

A handover, agreed between states, of detained or convicted people connected with intelligence.

Example: on 10 February 1962, on the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, the American pilot Francis Gary Powers was exchanged for the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.¹
