confidential contact (KP)

A semi-formal category of collaboration with the SB, used until the end of the 1960s.

According to the glossary of the IPN Archival Inventory, the category existed until 1970. A confidential contact was not asked for a written declaration or a handwritten curriculum vitae, and the officer assigned the codename without the person's knowledge. Until the late 1960s it was used alongside the operational contact and the official contact.1

The KP category covered people who could not formally be recruited as secret collaborators – for example PZPR members or people in high positions – as well as people with whom only loose contact was maintained or who could not be recruited for operational reasons. Operational instruction no. 006/70 of 1970 formally replaced it with the operational contact (KO).1
